West Freeport: Durham, Pownal and Desert Roads

A fresh clams sign on Durham Road in Freeport

West Freeport is Freeport on acreage, and the part of town most buyers never see from Main Street. It runs from I-295 west to the Pownal and Durham lines along three roads: Durham Road (Route 136), Pownal Road and Desert Road. No waterfront, no sidewalks, long driveways and a lot of woods.

History

These were the back farms of Freeport, cleared in the 1800s and largely grown back since. Overgrazing on one of them uncovered the glacial sand that became the Desert of Maine, a tourist stop on Desert Road since 1925. Bradbury Mountain, just over the Pownal line, has been a state park since 1939. The subdivisions here date from the 1980s onward, and building has picked up again, with the condo neighborhoods on Youngs Lane and at Concord Brook and new houses on Durham Road, Pownal Road and the streets toward the Pownal line. L.L.Bean's Fogg Farm trails off Webster Road and Winterwood Farm's 46 conserved acres keep much of the land open.

The houses

Colonials, capes and saltboxes from 1980 to 2005 on 1 to 5 acres along Webster Road, Hunter Road, Beech Hill Road and the roads off Pownal Road. New houses built since 2022 on Durham Road, Pownal Road and the newer streets near the Pownal line. A few 1940s and 1950s farmhouses that have been renovated. Newer condos at Youngs Lane, Concord Brook and Tidal Brook with one level living and association fees. Mobile homes on the smaller rural lots. All on well and septic except the condos on the Route 1 side. Lots are measured in acres, not feet, and the 2.5 acre rural minimum applies almost everywhere.

Trails and landmarks

Bradbury Mountain State Park, 5 minutes up Pownal Road. The Desert of Maine. Florida Lake Park off Route 125 (Wardtown Road), with a loop trail around the lake. Hedgehog Mountain. Fogg Farm trails. Winterwood Farm conservation land on Webster Road. Exit 20 and Exit 22 on I-295. The village is 3 to 6 miles, Portland 25 minutes, Lewiston and Auburn 30.

The market

Poland Road, West Freeport. Land Balsam sold for the Town of Freeport.

West Freeport has two markets. Older capes, ranches and farmhouses sell for less than most of Freeport, while the eight new single family houses built here since 2022 had a median closed price of about $970,000. In the two years ending October 2026, about half of West Freeport sales closed at $700,000 or more, and the median was higher than in North Freeport or the village. What we check before a listing here goes live

The driveway and who maintains the road. The well test and any treatment system, since arsenic and radon show up in this part of town. The septic age and the Maine transfer inspection rules. Tree growth or farmland tax status, which carries a penalty if the use changes. Any association rules on the condo neighborhoods.
