Freeport, Maine Our Town: A Community Self Portrait NEA Project 2023-2024

Our Town: A Community Self Portrait is a community arts documentary project, organized by Meetinghouse Arts, funded in part by the National Endowment for the Arts. This project invites ALL Freeport residents and businesses to photograph and write about the people, places and activities that exemplify what is meaningful and distinctive about Freeport, community and home.

Exhibitions for the project will be held October 25-Nov 3 at Meetinghouse Arts, the Freeport Historical Society, Freeport Community Services, the Freeport Community Library and Visit Freeport. Community conversations to discuss the exhibitions will be held at Meetinghouse Arts. Selected images will be published as postcards and the project will be archived at the Freeport Historical Society.

Partners with Meetinghouse Arts on Our Town: A Community Self Portrait include: The Town of Freeport, Freeport Historical Society, Freeport Economic Development Corporation,  the Freeport Chamber of Commerce, Freeport Community Services, Freeport Community Library, Visit Freeport, Freeport Conservation Trust, Tri-Town Equity and Inclusion Coalition, RSU5, and the Desert of Maine Center for Arts & Ecology.

    Dr. Ayana Elizabeth Johnson is a marine biologist, policy expert, writer and the Roux Distinguished Scholar of environmental science at Bowdoin College. Barton Seaver is an author, speaker and chef on a mission to restore our relationship with the ocean, the land, and with each other—through sustainable eating. Together, they will lead us down a path to a healthier planet and healthier selves. Combined, Johnson and Seaver's TED talks have had over 5 million listeners.

    Each year, Visit Freeport presents one of Maine’s most popular holiday celebrations, Sparkle Celebration. The 2024 festival kicks off in Freeport on Friday, December 6, 2024 with the Sparkle Celebration Parade of Lights, which ends with Santa arriving to bring the famous talking Christmas Tree to life!

    The fun continues for ten days with lots of lights and holiday merrymaking, including Gift Card Giveaways, the Sparkle Stroll, and Sparkle Frosty Frolic.

    Meetinghouse Arts is a project of the Arts & Cultural Alliance of Freeport. The newly renovated venue includes a 200-seat performance hall, a gallery, and a meeting space. Here, the community can create, collaborate, learn, present, and enjoy an array of arts and cultural work. Within the facility, ACAF will curate local and traveling programming, host classes and workshops for all ages.
