Late Summer Home Project Series: How to Maintain a Beautiful, Safe and Cozy Home: Part Four

This is the fourth part of a Six Part Series, Best Late Summer Home Projects - but this one is a diversion from the projects. Late summer in Maine is a magical time - and Labor Day weekend is a good time to check off the summer to-do list for fun with family & friends.

10 Things to Do to Catch the Last of Maine Summer:

  1. Walk, Hike, Bike.

Take a stroll outdoors, along your street, downtown or in the woods.  See our Local Resources page for walking, hiking & biking opportunities in Maine.  Also, there is still time to visit the Guardians of the Seeds exhibit at the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens.  Wear your summer whites.

  2. Firepit & Stars.

Now is also a wonderful time to sit around a fire pit in the yard or find one locally - like the gorgeous one at the Harraseeket Inn in Freeport.  Chat with family & friends, toast a marshmallow or just sip a beverage and star-gaze

  3. Outdoor Show.

See an outdoor show or concert in Maine before Summer is over -  Thompson’s Point in Portland is a great place to catch a larger show, but there are great local shows town by town, like Low Lily playing outdoors in downtown Freeport at Meetinghouse Arts this weekend.  See our Local Resources page for events by town & city in Maine.

  4. Dine Outdoors.

There are fabulous spots in Maine to dine outdoors - find your perfect seat and enjoy your favorite beverage & local food. Eat ice cream or gelato from an outdoor stand - a key Maine summer tradition  -while you can.

  5. Boating.

Take your boat out for the afternoon (or a friend’s boat)  - or play tourist for the day and catch a cruise on the Mailboat in Casco Bay, a sailing ship with Portland Schooner Company or a puffin or whale-watching cruise with Cap’n Fish’s Cruises in Boothbay.

  6. Outdoor Movie.

Watch a movie outside at the Saco Drive In or in your backyard with friends & family while the weather is still warm.

  7. Farmer’s Market or Art Show.

Go to a Maine Farmer’s Market, local art show or craft fair. There are also flea markets and antique shows to check out before the summer is over.

  8. Late Summer Outdoor BBQ.

Have friends over for a late summer outdoor BBQ in your backyard or some of the local parks like Winslow Park in Freeport.

  9. Picnic.

Have a picnic in the town parks or state parks around Maine.

  10. Afternoon on the Patio.

Sit on your patio, porch or in your backyard and have dinner or just sip a beverage and enjoy the gentle late summer breeze.

Bonus: Road Trip.

Take a road trip up the coast, or visit a town or island community you have never been to before in Maine. We suggest hidden inland places like Fairfield - with Hillman’s Bakery and a local farmer’s market. Grab some drive-through burgers at Belanger’s and picnic in Mill Island Park on the Kennebec. Check out the Two Cent Bridge nearby in Winslow, -  a beautiful suspension bridge over the river.
