Freeport Energy Forum 2026: Heat Pumps, Solar and Maine Home Energy Savings

HOME ENERGY SOLUTIONS + OPPORTUNITIES: Forum & Discussion Resilient homes, lower bills, energy independence Saturday, March 14, 2026 | 9:00 am to 12:00 pm | Freeport Community Center

Why We're Co-Hosting Freeport's Community Energy Forum

At Balsam Realty, we talk with Maine homeowners every day. And increasingly, the conversation isn't just about buying and selling. It's about the cost of heating a home, the reliability of the power grid and whether technologies like heat pumps and solar are right for a specific property and budget.

Those are important questions. And they deserve straight, unbiased answers from trusted local experts.

That is why we have partnered with passivhausMAINE, along with FreeportCAN (Freeport Climate Action Now) and venue partner Freeport Community Services to organize the Freeport Community Energy Forum, a free public event happening Saturday, March 14, 2026 from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm at the Freeport Community Center, 53 Depot Street, Freeport, Maine.

This is our second partner energy forum and builds on a growing tradition of community education here in Freeport. We are proud to be part of that conversation.

What Is the Freeport Community Energy Forum?

The forum is a free three-hour community event designed to help Maine homeowners understand their options for improving home energy efficiency, lowering utility bills and building household resilience.

The program includes three panel discussions featuring trusted local experts as well as an opportunity to visit informational tables hosted by nonprofit organizations and service providers. Topics covered include:

  • High-efficiency heat pumps: how they work, whether they're right for Maine winters and what real homeowners have experienced
  • Solar power and home energy storage: options, costs and what to realistically expect
  • Backup and resilience technologies: how to keep your home running during outages
  • Maine state incentives and financing: how to fund energy upgrades using available state and federal programs

Registration is free but seating is limited. Register here via Eventbrite.

Meet the Experts

The forum brings together some of Maine's most experienced voices in home energy:

Scott Libby, Owner of Royal River Heat Pumps, brings over 35 years of HVAC experience and will lead a practical experience-based discussion on heat pumps in Maine homes including common myths, real challenges and how they integrate with solar and storage systems.

Nate Cronauer of Maine Solar Solutions, Education and Outreach Coordinator and University of Southern Maine graduate in Environmental Planning, will speak on home energy generation and independence covering solar, storage, geothermal and emerging technologies.

Alan Caron, Maine author, columnist and founder of ClimateWork Maine will co-lead the panel on home energy independence drawing on his personal experience building super-insulated heat pump-powered homes across Maine.

Andy Meyer, Senior Program Manager at Efficiency Maine, will help residents understand how to fund heat pumps, water heaters, insulation, electric vehicles and batteries using state programs.

Mika Heming, Director of retrofitMAINE, will share insights on navigating the retrofit process and the resources available to Maine homeowners seeking to upgrade their homes.

State Representative Melanie Sachs, Chair of the Maine Legislature's Energy, Utilities and Technology Committee, will provide statewide context for residential energy transition in Maine including current legislative initiatives, climate and clean energy goals and how state policy is supporting homeowners and communities through incentives, planning and infrastructure investment.

Why This Matters for Freeport Homeowners

Maine's older housing stock, harsh winters and rising energy costs make home energy efficiency one of the most impactful investments a homeowner can make. Heat pumps are now widely used across Maine even in our coldest months and state incentive programs through Efficiency Maine make them significantly more affordable than many homeowners realize.

At Balsam Realty, we've seen firsthand how energy efficiency affects home values. Buyers increasingly ask about heating systems, insulation and utility costs. A home with modern energy systems is not only more comfortable to live in but more competitive on the market.

We co-organized this forum because we believe an informed homeowner makes better decisions, whether that means upgrading their current home or making a smart purchase when buying a new one.
