Meet Kate and Jonas
Kate Werner – Certified Pricing Specialist, Staging and Market Advisor
Kate grew up on the midcoast of Maine, shaped by its coastline, village life and strong sense of place. She earned a BA in Political Science from the University of Southern Maine, followed by a JD from the University of Maine School of Law. With 28 years of experience as a licensed Maine attorney, Kate brings a sharp eye for contract clarity and a calm presence at every stage of a transaction. While she does not practice law, her legal background informs her pricing strategy, market analysis and risk mitigation.
Kate is also a certified pricing specialist and staging expert, helping sellers prepare their homes for maximum value and guiding buyers with vision and clarity. Her strengths in design, organization and presentation help clients get results.
Beyond real estate, Kate serves as Vice President of the Board at Meetinghouse Arts, chairs its marketing committee and has long championed public education and the creative economy in Freeport.
Jonas Werner – Business Strategist and Market Expert
Originally from southern Florida, Jonas made Maine home more than 35 years ago. A graduate of the University of Southern Maine School of Business, he began his career in financial services before moving into hospitality and real estate. He co-founded Azure Café in Freeport with Kate, a locally celebrated restaurant known for its commitment to quality, community and local sourcing.
At Balsam, Jonas applies his financial acumen and entrepreneurial experience to pricing, positioning and negotiation. His skill in identifying hidden issues before inspection adds meaningful value to both buyers and sellers. He has also served as a longtime board member at Freeport Community Services, where he leads fundraising and serves on the finance committee.
Rooted in Freeport, Focused on Community
Kate and Jonas have built a life in Freeport through decades of civic leadership and service. Their work with Freeport Community Services, Meetinghouse Arts and local outreach has been recognized by:
- Citizen of the Year, awarded by the Town of Freeport
- Carol Kaplan Community Service Award, presented by Freeport Community Services
They are also founders and long-term organizers of the Freeport Community Thanksgiving Dinner, which brings hundreds of neighbors together for food, friendship and mutual support each year.
Their decision to co-found Balsam Realty grew naturally from these commitments. They believe real estate should reflect the same values that have defined their professional and personal lives—trust, transparency, service and deep local knowledge.
